Several people have asked me how I mounted my GPS unit to the dash so I decided to do a write up on it.

I used same method on 3 Panthers.

Here what you will need.

1. Garmin Nuvi 200-285 series. It may work with other models but these are the only ones I've used. I picked up my last 2 units used for around 50 bucks. These units come with regular screen or wide screen. Both are compatible. I suggest using a regular screen as it is easier to install.

2. Windshield suction cup mount. If you are buying it new it should come with one.

3. A thin sheet of aluminum. I used a piece of aluminum siding.

Procedure:

Before you do the installation I suggest uploading any software that you may want to install onto the unit. Custom icons, map updates, etc.

To get latest map updates follow the link in this post,
http://vicsters.ca/forum/showthread....1224#post11224
I can't link it here directly as I am not certain on the legality of it.

If you want a Crown Vic icon to replace the default, here is one that I made. To install hook up the GPS to your PC and extract into the Vehicles folder.

Download here.

Now the actual install into the car.

First thing you gotta do is remove the dash surround. There are plenty of write ups on how to do that so I won't go into it. For reference go here .

We are gonna be working with center vent.

What you want to do is flip the surround over. There are 4 tabs holding the vent in place. Using a flat head screwdriver lift the 2 tabs at the bottom of the vent and take the vent out.

This is what you will end up with.

Now what you want to do is remove the grills. Stick a flat head where shown and pop the grills out.

You should end up with a bare vent piece. Don't remove the flap. Reinstall it back into the dash surround.

Test fit the unit to get an idea of how it will sit.

Plug the wiring harness in place. When mounted the wiring connector will sit flush against left side of the vent opening.

Next take the windshield suction cup mount and pop the suction cup off. Just pull on it and it will come apart. All we need is the actual bracket that attaches to the GPS.

Take a piece of aluminum and cut a strip 5.5 centimeters wide. You don't want to go over 6 centimeters because it will be too wide and you won't be able to get the bracket on. You will want to use a strip that's around 40 centimeters long.

Figure out how this is gonna work yet? If not then keep reading. Slip the aluminum strip under the bracket. It will be a tight fit and may feel like the bracket won't go over it. Just give it some force a couple of times and it will stay on there.

This is what you will need to make out of that aluminum. Lucky for you I did all the measurements so you won't have to do any guessing on the dimensions. The electrical connector gets sandwiched between vent opening and the bracket.

I recommend making these bends when you slide unit over the vent. Once it's in place wrap it around edges of the vent for a tight fit. If you make these bends incorrectly the unit will flop around.

With GPS attached to the dash reinstall everything into the car. If you are using a wide screen version you will need to install your radio into the dash prior to installing the GPS.

I ran my power feed down the clock opening above the EATC and hooked it up into the cigarette lighter.

With regular screen you can install the radio with surround in the car. With wide screen you can't.

Finished product. Make sure to keep the vent flap in a closed position, especially in winter when the heat is on. Wouldn't want to cook the unit. I suppose you can open it with a/c on and cool it down.

Wide screen version. Notice how it sits over the radio.
I filled out the application and paid the fee; currently I am waiting for them to approve the application so I may schedule an interview.

If you have it: what questions did they ask? Anything other than the "why do you want it, where are you going, are you a criminal" questions? I know I have a 15-min interview each with Canadian and US border patrol...

Basically just sick of waiting 30 minutes at the Peace/Rainbow Bridges for crossings, when the NEXUS users speed through in under 3 minutes.

I picked up a little flyer at the counter about the canadian ford challenge on July 13th and 14th. DaSilva has put together a weekend of racing at St. Thomas for Fords only. I don't know if I will be going but it would be good to have a few panthers in the mustang mix just to keep them in line..lol Maybe we can get some of the supercharged panthers there to let them know that although our cars are big and heavy they are not slow.

I did 3 runs. 1st was best at 16.5 @ 80 mph, second run had no slip because they had problems with the printer, 3rd was 16.7 @ 83mph. Not bad for nearly stock MGM with non PI heads and 2:73 gears.
